The winter months are so wonderfully festive. So many stores and buildings are all dressed up with lights and other decorations — it’s fun to watch entire towns come together to make the area beautiful for the holidays!
Christmas may be the first holiday to come to mind and you may think of doing a Christmas decoration as you plan to decorate your business for the holidays, but of course, it isn’t the only game in town. Read on to learn about some of the tips on how to decorate a business for holidays.
Other holidays and celebrations
There’s Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, an eight-day celebration of the rededication of a Hebrew temple in Jerusalem, when a flame with only enough oil to burn one night ended up flickering for eight. Traditional decorations for this holiday season include menorahs and dreidels.
Then there’s Kwanzaa, a weeklong celebration honoring African-American heritage and culture, which takes place the week after Christmas. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, including unity, self-determination and creativity. The celebration culminates in a feast and gift giving.
And, of course, there’s the winter solstice, taking place this year on Dec. 21. It means many different things to many people, but it happens at the beginning of winter and is traditionally celebrated with festivals, feasts, singing, dancing and fires.
If you’re trying to be inclusive in decorating your business, the first option is naturally to include decorations for people of every faith and holiday persuasion. But unless you’re quite the skilled decorator, you may have some difficulty creating a tasteful display that encompasses everyone’s interests and beliefs.
Here are a couple more ideas:
Keep things neutral with holiday decorations
Being of a different faith doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Christmas lights, snowflakes and other celebrations of the winter season. If you’re decorating the outside of your business, consider keeping your lights to a neutral white or even a cool blue — that color’s “in” for 2021! — to be inviting to people of all faiths and beliefs.
Indoors, skip the commercial Christmas tree and even the menorah, instead opting for a celebration of winter outside and warmth inside. Snowflakes, spray-painted bare branches and other natural elements are a great start, but the sky’s the limit.
Celebrate family
And if you’re not interested in doing an overt display of as many types of December commercial holiday decorations as possible, why not ask your employees to bring in a few eye catching photos of their families celebrating holidays meaningful to their cultures or faiths?
Whether they mean something spiritual, secular or simply seasonal to your employees and clients, family is a huge part of the holidays, no matter which one you celebrate. Collect photos of kids opening Christmas presents, a toddler’s first Hanukkah, a family sledding together or any other winter celebration — and create a photo collage of your employees enjoying their loved ones and families during this special time.
